New NEC SX-4 available at CSC e-HPC portal

Maidstone 13 March 2001 NEC ESS installed a supercomputer system in the UK for general usage through CSC's High Performance Computing (eHPC) portal. The NEC SX-4 with eight parallel vector processors and shared memory was installed in CSC's Maidstone Data Centre in January 2001.

According to John Rawlins, Director of Supercomputing Operations within CSC's Global Infrastructure Services (GIS) Division "the new NEC system will significantly enhance CSC's current HPC capabilities and provide a capability well suited to a wide range of supercomputing applications".

The SX-4 will be available to industry through e-HPC.com, CSC's new supercomputing service, which makes the use of large-scale HPC systems more affordable through the use of Internet. Many organisations need regular access to HPC facilities and the implementation of NEC's SX-4 at CSC will benefit most those organisations who require the use of fast, reliable and secure supercomputing facilities with varying demands.

Corporations, governments, defence establishments and education authorities place their trust in CSC to develop best of breed solutions

- advising, building, implementing and maintaining information systems which set them apart from their competitors. The implementation of the NEC Supercomputer will provide sophisticated and powerful technology for their leading edge research and development.

The SX series of supercomputers from the Japanese company NEC combines high- efficiency shared memory vector computing with the scalability of distributed memory systems. This means nodes can be easily combined for computationally intensive tasks. SX-4 Series is highly thought of for excellent, effective performance, value for money and ease of use.

The new NEC system will enable CSC's clients to accurately predict and understand how things react and change in different configurations and environments; an essential activity for many businesses delivering high quality results and products in short time-scales.
