SUN delivers plug-and-play clusters

Mountain View 19 March 2001 Sun delivers a Standard Cluster Configuration. This is a factory tested, configured and cabled hardware and software platform that assists in rapid, low-risk implementation of highly available, failover protected network-based applications.

The new Sun Standard Cluster Configuration is designed to reduce the complexity and speed the deployment of highly available e-business and IT infrastructures by delivering high availability, failover protection and reliable load balancing in a complete, easy to install, integrated package of industry-leading Sun hardware and software.

The Sun Standard Cluster Configuration B1 is the first platform in a family of integrated cluster configurations. It is based on the Sun Cluster 3.0 software, Sun Enterprise 220R servers, Sun StorEdge D1000 disk arrays, and the Netra T1 Model 105 management server. Redundant servers and storage arrays are designed to provide failover protection for improved uptime. Rigorous testing and system qualification by Sun improves the reliability of the system and the single rack factory integration of the platform streamlines the time, cost component and IT resources required for a integrating a cluster.

The hardware and software in Sun Standard Cluster Configurations is integrated and tested at the system level using established best practices extracted from engineering recommendations or through field experience, to help increase system availability.

At the core of the platform is Sun Cluster 3.0 software, Sun's next generation clustering technology. An extension to the Solaris Operating Environment, Sun Cluster 3.0 software takes clustering to a new level for network-based applications including mail, web and database applications, by combining unique application service management capability. It features the first clustered file system for standard UNIX environments, which enables the creation of a cluster-wide global application service that allows an application to be installed once and run anywhere on the cluster. As a result, service level management is easier which results in simplified administration and lower operational costs. This is complemented by the increased/high availability delivered by the clustered environment.

The Sun Standard Cluster Configuration B1 is available immediately. The configuration ships as an integrated platform for the same price as purchasing the various components separately.
