Co-operation between Compaq and SARA on grids and Bio-informatics

Amsterdam 28 March 2001 Compaq and the Amsterdam computing centre SARA installed an Alphacluster configuration of 16 workstations, coupled via a Myrinet with a peak performance of 20 Gflop/s. The system will be used for Grid and Bio-informatics research.

The new system will be used for various research projects. The cluster is already in use for a number of research projects in which SARA is involved, such as the DataGrid project.

By installing the 'GLOBUS middleware' software on the cluster, the new resources can be accessed via a Grid architecture. In the DataGrid framework, the cluster is accessible for the Dutch partners in DatGrid (NIKHEF en KNMI), and for other institutes, such as UvA and CWI.

The system will also be used for applications in the field of bio-informatics. In this framework a new application is already running on the cluster: an application in the field of gene-expression from the Academic Medical Centre of the UvA. )
