Distributed Science peer-to-peer layer public open source
Pasadena 12 April 2001 Distributed Science intends to make its peer-to-peer infrastructure for
Distributed Processing available under an open source license starting May 1,
2001.
Source code for the peer-to-peer enabled Harvester software is planned to be
made available to the public under a version of the BSD License on May 1, 2001.
"Our open source approach is driven by the desire to spark co-operation in the
creation of a peer-reviewed, secure and highly flexible foundation for all sorts
of P2P applications. Some of these applications we already know about and many
new ideas will be given a head start by using an existing, royalty-free,
cross-platform basis for all data transactions," said Armin Lenz, Vice President
Marketing of Distributed Science. "We want to spread the enabling level of this
technology throughout the marketplace, leverage our experience in improving and
utilizing it to create massive cost saving advantages for those who employ it
and create the standard platform for a multitude of peer-to-peer services.
Everyone will get a chance to build their technologies on top of and into a
universally available infrastructure that won't give individual users or IT
managers headaches."
