Cray Shmem compatible library on Scali
Oslo 11 May 2001 Scali has a compatibility library for
Cray Shmem programs, called Scali Shmem. It helps Scali's customers in leveraging Linux
cluster technology. As some of these customers have used T3E machines
in the past, they are likely to have software that uses Shmem. These
applications can now run on Scali clusters.
To exploit
special hardware features on Cray T3E machines, Cray developed a
programming interface called Shmem. It relies on the symmetric layout
of memory in nodes taking part in the same computation, to provide a
rich selection of one-sided communication, reduction routines, atomic
memory operations, and other features.
Shmem has mainly been available on machines of Cray origin. The availability of Scali Shmem on Scali clusters
not only enables porting of code from T3E environments, but also cross
platform development. Applications can mix features from Scali Shmem
and Scali's MPI implementation ScaMPI freely.
