32-processor Unisys ES7000 Demonstrates 64-bit Intel Itanium Processor

Blue Bell 08 May 2001 Intel and Unisys gave the world's first public demonstration of 64-bit Intel Itanium processors on the Unisys e-@ction Enterprise Server ES7000 on April 26 in New York City. The Itanium processor is the first in a family of 64-bit processors from Intel.

The Unisys ES7000 featured Itanium processors running a beta 64-bit version of the Microsoft Windows 2000 Server operating system. The Unisys system is the only one now available to provide a seamless in-the-field upgrade from 32-bit Intel processors to the new 64-bit Itanium processors.

"With the Itanium processors on board the ES7000, we will be able to unleash the full power of Cellular MultiProcessing (CMP) technology," said Mark Feverston, vice president, Unisys Server Programs. "The ES7000 continues to be a proof point for the enterprise capability of Intel architecture chips. We are confident that Intel's Itanium processor family can address the toughest challenges an enterprise data center can be called upon to handle."

CMP-based servers shipped with Intel Pentium III Xeon processors will be able to use the Itanium architecture technology with no other changes to the system. In addition, a single CMP system can be configured with both Pentium III Xeon and Itanium processors within the same box. As a result, investments in CMP-based servers will be protected as customers build on, rather than replace, their systems.
