Copaq cancels Unysis CMP support

Blue Bell 01 May 2001 Compaq has cancelled plans to market servers based on the Unisys cellular multiprocessing (CMP) architecture Compaq began shipping CMP based servers under the Proliant Ml770 name earlier this year.

"CMP has proven itself to be the only viable scale-up solution for the Windows 2000 Datacenter Server environment, most effectively handling large databases and offering great advantages for server consolidation," said George Gazerwitz, president, Unisys Systems & Technology. "We regret that one of our valued OEM partners, with whom we have had an excellent working relationship, is discontinuing marketing CMP-based servers. We understand that in this difficult economic environment, companies must make choices to focus their limited resources."

"Nonetheless, we are encouraged by the strength of the Unisys/Microsoft partnership as more clients embrace the compelling value proposition of CMP and Windows 2000 Datacenter Server for the enterprise environment. We remain focused on maintaining technology leadership in the high performance Intel server market, and, to that end, we plan to add more than 200 new CMP sales and technical support positions to serve this market. We will continue to work with all of our partners to offer customers true enterprise class performance and reliability with breakthrough price performance."
