EDA market ready for Sun Technical Compute Farm with Grid Engine

Las Vegas 19 June 2001 A growing number of companies looking to improve their production and speed their time to market in the electronic design automation space are looking at the Sun Technical Compute Farm (Sun TCF) solution for their compute-intensive EDA needs. Roughly 80 percent of Sun TCF sales have been logged in the EDA market segment since the hardware and software solution was announced at DAC last year.

Designed for ease of purchase, implementation and support, the Sun TCF system is a pre-configured, turnkey solution that combines the company's industry leading compute engines and storage arrays with Sun's Solaris Operating Environment and Sun[tm] Grid Engine software. This highly integrated stack is tested, certified and supported by Sun, removing the high costs, complexities and risks associated with building a compute farm on your own.

The Sun TCF system effectively addresses the skyrocketing demand for computing power by dramatically increasing resource utilization across the network, including CPU, memory and storage. Additionally, Sun is dropping the price of the Sun TCF solution by more than 25 percent, which should allow companies to get more compute power for their dollar. The Sun TCF Base Rack is now priced at $169,000, and the 4-Way Expansion Rack has been lowered to $269,000.

With the inclusion of Sun Grid Engine software, compute farm users have the option of using a mature distributed resource management software for their compute-intensive projects. This is essential in maintaining the performance advantage that a compute farm is designed to deliver.

To keep pace with the high interest shown in Sun's compute farm technology, Sun continues to build its customer support and integration mechanisms for the Sun TCF system and Sun Grid Engine software. Sun announced today, for example, that it has teamed with Blackstone Technology Group to provide a wide range of support and consulting services. Sun has also embarked on a specialized training program for its sales and VAR channels to enhance support for Sun Grid Engine software customers worldwide. Called the Grid Computing Certification Program, The courses will lead to highly qualified Sun Certified Grid Computing Specialists who can offer expert installation and support services.

Ericsson, has chosen the Sun TCF solution for its testing and development center in Finland. Ericsson needed to upgrade its computing capabilities to handle its Simulated Test Environment software such as Simulated Environment Architecture (SEA). Its new applications had outgrown their previous systems, and when evaluating the Sun TCF package, Ericsson realized the value and support of a global brand like Sun.
