NCMRWF accepts Cray SV1 system

Seattle 16 August 2001 Cray has successfully completed the acceptance test for a Cray SV1 supercomputer at India's National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF). The system will help NCMRWF enhance models used to develop medium range forecasts (three to 10 days in advance) of monsoons and other weather patterns that affect agriculture, ocean state forecasting and other public services.

Under a subcontract with SGI, the 24-processor Cray SV1 supercomputer was installed at the NCMRWF facility in Delhi, India, during the second quarter 2001. The consolidated package of high-performance hardware and software, valued at nearly $2 million, also included services and servers.

The Cray SV1 supercomputer replaced a prior-generation Cray XMP(TM) system.

The National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting is the premier in>stitution in India to provide medium range weather forecasts through deterministic methods and to render agrometeorological advisory services to farmers based on such forecasts.
