California tech institutes and SGI sign collaboration

Mountain View 28 August 2001 The California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology, a collaboration between UC San Diego and UC Irvine, has signed a contract with SGI. As a first step an SGI Onyx 3400 visualization system has been installed.

On a co-investment basis, the high-performance computing company will supply hardware and software to be used by research teams involved in projects under the auspices of Cal-(IT)2, created last year to ensure that California maintains its leadership in cutting-edge technologies.

SGI has already installed an SGI Onyx 3400 visualization system for Cal-(IT)2 use at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, Calif., representing a co-investment of more than $200,000.

The SGI Onyx 3400 visualization system installed at Scripps will drive a large-scale immersive display, part of an optically linked metro-area collaborative environment for analyzing satellite imagery, topography and other three-dimensional data sets. Scripps needs this technology to study such topics as the impact of global warming on the planet's climate, whether overfishing and pollution will destroy the sea's productivity and whether the oceans can provide new drugs to treat diseases.
