Salsamedia purchases five SGI Media Server Systems for Salsa On-Air

Amsterdam 14 September 2001 Five SGI Media Server for broadcast systems have been sold, delivered and implemented to Salsamedia of Oslo, Norway. The SGI Media Server systems will serve as the initial communications structure for a new broadcast-quality Salsamedia solution named Salsa On-Air, which will supply Internet-based, format-independent exchange of television commercials. An SGI Media Server system running Salsa On-Air is now operational in TV2's technical centre in Bergen, Norway; two are placed with post production houses in Scandinavia, a fourth is placed in Salsa's offices; and a fifth has been installed at a television station in London, UK.

SGI worked closely with Salsamedia during the installation and testing at TV2,Norway's largest commercial TV station, in Bergen, and the "go" decision was made just prior to the International Broadcasters' Convention (IBC), which is being held in Amsterdam this week. The SGI Media Server systems run Salsa On-Air to provide encoding, decoding and storage of various formats of high-resolution video/audio files.

The SGI Media Server systems are integrated into the existing acquisition and play-out infrastructure of the broadcasting sites and will be part of the planned Salsamedia complete infrastructure solution throughout the production, post-production and play-out chain. This Salsamedia and SGI server-based solution is expected to provide networking, archiving, client servers and Web applications to on-line customers, with billing systems in the near future and eventual full-length TV programming and film delivery. The Salsamedia solution provides an alternative to costly overnight delivery.

Salsamedia will premiere Salsa On-Air in September. The company is currently developing a variety of new software solutions and services, including a Salsa Archive to store large amounts of broadcast video, which is expected to be available shortly after IBC. According to Marit Wetterhus, CEO of Salsmedia, Salsa broadcast solutions are and will be entirely format-independent, another reason why the SGI IRIX OS-based SGI Media Server system, with open architecture that manages video as data, is the company's choice.

SGI Media Server is a completely integrated solution for serving video, audio and data that is based on open video standards, data networking, file transfer formats and storage technology. Setting itself apart from other video servers, SGI Media Server for broadcast takes advantage of the revolutionary distribute data, view video approach-managing video as data and distributing the files at faster than real time rates over data networks within a facility or between facilities.
