MSC.Software purchases SGI VirtualInsight business

Santa Ana 19 October 2001 MSC.Software, a provider of simulation software, services and systems, has purchased the SGI VirtualInsight line of business. The VirtualInsight software suite is a data management system that allows manufacturing companies to drive down the cost of design and testing while improving time to market for new products. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

The Web-based VirtualInsight system manages all of the data created during the R&D and production processes, helping companies efficiently and effectively manage and utilise the data for current and future product development uses. VirtualInsight includes data management software customised for specific applications, such as automotive crash simulations, and integrated with each customer's existing processes and legacy systems. The system manages all of the data created during these processes, automatically tracking data dependencies and structuring the data for efficient use. VirtualInsight was developed by SGI in conjunction with a leading automobile manufacturer.

According to consulting and research firm CIMdata, the market for product development management software and services like VirtualInsight is expected to exceed $13 billion by 2005.
