Korea's' Posdata develops high-performance supercomputer

Seoul 24 October 2001 Posdata Co. has developed a massive high-performance parallel supercomputer in conjunction with IBM Korea and Linuxone Co., with 160 units of IBM x Series Server 330.

The supercomputer has a processor speed of 185 gigaflops, the highest performance among parallel supercomputers based on the Linux operating system and developed in South Korea, according to the company. It can perform more than 180 billion calculations per second on the Linux operating system.

Posdata claims the supercomputer is expected to rank in the top 120 high-performance supercomputers around the world. With a view to boosting its processor speed, the company adopted the ultra high-speed network "Myrinet".

Areas in which the supercomputer could be utilised include data analysis or simulations, animation, Internet broadcasting, video on demand (VOD) services, biotechnology and weather forecasting. "The delivery time for the supercomputer was only three months, compared with six months to one year in advanced countries", a Posdata official said.
