How will information and communications technologies improve European competitiveness, and the quality of life of all our citizens? What will be the main technological challenges of tomorrow? How can the European Union best contribute to reinforcing an Information Society in Europe? The answers to these questions and many others are all to be found in Düsseldorf in December.
"Technologies Serving People" will be the central theme to be addressed by Conference sessions and Exhibits alike. IST 2001 will also offer an opportunity to understand the structure and contents of the 6th Framework for EU research 2002-2006, and the corresponding Specific Programme for R&D activities in the field of Information Society Technologies.
Traditionally, it is during the IST Event that the three Grand Prize Winners of the European Information Society Technologies Prize are announced, and receive their awards. Launched under the joint initiative of the European Council for Applied Sciences and Engineering (Euro-CASE) and the IST Programme, the prize rewards the most promising innovations in IT applications and services: those most likely to become a commercial success.
With topics ranging from cybercrime to entertainment and nano-technology, and about 150 innovative projects on display, last year's event in Nice attracted more than 3000 participants from Europe and beyond. Over the years, the annual conference and exhibition of IST has become a major European Commission event, offering European IT industries and specialists a unique opportunity to keep pace with the best of innovation in Europe, to exchange experiences and ideas and to make or renew key contacts.
