IA-64 Server Technology - first Fujitsu Siemens Computers Primergy customers

Munich 15 January 2001 Fujitsu Siemens Computers announced first customers of the Primergy series equipped with the new Intel IA-64 processors. These SMP systems consist of four IA-64. These are the well known Computer Centre of the University Mannheim and the Paderborn Centre for Parallel Computing. These pilot systems will be used for application tests and training of the students. The mass delivery is expected starting in April 2001.

Fujitsu Siemens Computers announced the delivery of the first Intel IA-64 based Primergy servers in academic institutions. The Computer Centre of the University Mannheim will use these servers mainly in practice-oriented teaching. SAP-based applications like ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) and CRM (Customer Relationship Management) and application oriented programming within SAP R/3, production planning and controlling are the main objects in the teaching field. The employees of the computer centre will support the teachers in using the new systems. The systems are scheduled to go in production in the summer term.

Dr. Hans Guenter Kruse, head of the Mannheim University Computer Centre meant that working with the newest technology in the education of students in applied economics and informatics is an important quality criteria. The cooperation with Fujitsu Siemens Computers in the field of IA-64 technology assures the education of the students on a computer platform that will be actual in practice still after the end of their studies.

The Paderborn Centre for Parallel Computing prepares - with the aid of the Primergy Servers - parallel applications for productive usage in heterogeneous environments. A method for image processing and an application for the simulation of fluid flow still use the advantages of the new processor architecture. Additionally SAP applications are tested in a cluster environment which consists of the Fujitsu Siemens Computers hpcLine and Primergy systems.
