The California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Cal-(IT)2) and the southern California Next Generation Internet (CalNGI) initiative are teaming up to develop and test applications that will run on future iterations of the World Wide Web. The new partners will collaborate with California companies through the recently-opened CalNGI Application Center at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC). To launch their new partnership, Cal-(IT)2 and CalNGI co-sponsored a workshop on January 24 in San Diego called "Demystifying Internet Quality of Service."

| | First part of SP supercomputer extension arrived in Amsterdam
The IBM SP at the academic supercomputing centre in Amsterdamentered a second phase in its
existence, exactly according to plan. The first extension is a fact now. At the beginning In January 2002, besides the three existing towers, two new ones
with Regatta-(p690) processors were placed. Each tower contains
one node with 32 Power4-processors, with a clock cycle of 1,1
GHz. This adds 280 Gigaflop/s to the existing peak
performance of 210 Gflop/s, doubling the capacity of
the system. Each node contains 32 Gbyte of shared memory. |

The programme from Europe's main supercomputer event, the International Supercomputer Conference 2002, that will be held in June in the German town of Heidelberg, is available. Keynote will be delivered by
Monika Henzinger from Google, with a presentation called" Indexing the Web: A Challenge for Supercomputing". Main conference topics are Grid computing, petaflop/s computing and supercomputing centres. A pre-conference one-day tutorial provides an overview of the current state of Grid computing.

| | How informative is the IDC Balanced Rating HPC Benchmark?
After several meetings of the IDC-convened HPC Forum in the period end
1999 - end 2001 a new benchmark for High Performance Systems was defined
and the first results were released during the SC 2001 Conference in
Denver in November 2001: the IDC Balanced Rating HPC Benchmark. In this article the usability of this new benchmark is discussed. We conclude it is not very usable. Some suggestions on better benchmarks are given.

NBC will employ a full complement of SGI IRIX OS-based visualisation systems to create and render pre-production and live-to-air broadcast graphics for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, airing from Salt Lake City, Utah, February 8 through February 24. NBC will build intros, outros, segment IDs, templates and 3D animations using Maya 4 software from Alias|Wavefront, an SGI company, running on four Silicon Graphics Onyx2 desk-side visualisation systems and two Silicon Graphics Octane2 visual workstations. The SGI systems will be housed in the graphics area of the NBC compound within the International Broadcast Center at the Salt Lake City Olympics site.

| | Compaq AlphaServer systems help Land Rover to shift the focus of automotive design away from the wind tunnel and onto the supercomputer
Land Rover, part of Ford Motor Company's Premier Automotive Group, has awarded Compaq a contract to supply 18 AlphaServer ES40 systems and two ES45 systems running Tru64 UNIX and to provide ongoing project management, systems administration, and maintenance support. This is part of Land Rover's plan to improve its Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) capability. The servers will be used to run a variety of applications in four key areas of the vehicle design process: crash analysis; Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD); structures analysis; and Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) analysis. This will dramatically increase efficiency, cut costs and development time as well as improve design quality. |

The U.S. Army is using a visualization
system powered by an SGI Onyx 3400 high-performance graphics system to create
highly realistic training simulations that will help prepare troops for

system from Mechdyne Corporation and SGI is located at the
Institute for Creative Technologies (ICT), Marina del Re, a
