 Dutch Platform/Foundation HPCN evolves from HPCN to general IT
The Dutch Platform/Foundation HPCN started in 1997 as a vehicle for administrating HPCN funds from the Dutch Government. After this programme had been ended, the Platform has repositioned itself as a user group for advanced computing in general, not focusing on HPCN itself anymore. The Platform HPCN presented the new strategic plan at a user meeting on May 28.

The Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVOCEANO) has purchased a powerful IBM eServer p690-based supercomputer, named Blue Ocean, that will perform basic research in the development of a practical vaccine for malaria and other infectious diseases.

 C-DAC and Horizon close joint development agreement to develop U.S.-India telecom products strategy
Horizon Companies Inc., a U.S.-based software developer and I.T. systems integrator, has signed a joint agreement with C-DAC, the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing, the research & development facility which developed India's first supercomputer. Under terms of the agreement, Horizon will expand development of telecom software products for the Indian market and will facilitate the marketing and distribution of C-DAC-developed software products, and will promote C-DAC's offshore development capabilities for the U.S. market.

The American Diabetes Association and Menlo Park-based biotechnology firm Entelos Inc. announced the first participant to join the Diabetes Research Forum. The first participant in the Diabetes Research Forum will be Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research & Development, L.L.C. The Forum is a groundbreaking scientific collaboration to advance research for the prevention, treatment, and cure of type 2 diabetes.  Celera Genomics publishes analysis of mouse chromosome
Celera Genomics, an Applera Corporation business, announced the publication of a comparative analysis of mouse chromosome 16 and the human genome, based on Celera Genomics' high quality assembly of the mouse and human genomes. Celera Genomics also announced that the DNA sequence of this mouse chromosome has been deposited at GenBank, the DNA Data Bank of Japan, and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory sequence repositories.

The Asia Pacific Bioinformatics Network (APBioNet) which promotes the growth of bioinformatics in the Asia Pacific region, has identified one of the biggest obstacles to widespread adoption amongst life scientists as the lack of integration and interoperability amongst the disparate bioinformatics software vendors, database providers and instrument devices. As a testbed pilot project, APBioNet is currently working with the best of breed bioinformatics database provider LION bioscience to integrate their popular SRS system with supercomputing pioneer Cray Inc. through the use of KOOPrime's applications integration system.

Many of the world's leading corporations, universities and research institutions are realising the performance and price benefits of standards-based technology for applications previously conducted on expensive proprietary systems. Since the launch of Dell's high-performance computing cluster (HPCC) programme in February, the company has delivered thousands of Dell PowerEdge servers worldwide to customers performing these complex computations with large groups of standards-based systems. In 1996, the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) in Copenhagen, Denmark, installed an NEC SX-4/16 supercomputer system, one of the best options available at that time. This system is now to be replaced with a NEC SX-6/48 supercomputer.

 Orders worth nearly $19 million for Cray SV2 supercomputer systems
Cray has received two orders totalling nearly $19 million from the U.S. Department of Defense and an additional governmental purchaser for Cray SV2 supercomputer systems and related services. The orders call for early air cooled systems to be delivered in 2002 so the purchasers can familiarise themselves with the operating system and begin to port their application codes to the SV2 system. Final deliveries are scheduled for 2003.

 ARSC installs Cray SX-6
The Arctic Region Supercomputing Center (ARSC) and Cray Inc. have signed an agreement that places a Cray SX-6 at ARSC. ARSC is pleased to be able to offer this leading technology to the wider High Performance Computing (HPC) community for testing and evaluation. This is the first installation of a Cray SX-6 system in the United States under the OEM agreement concluded last year between Cray Inc. and NEC. New users should be able to access the system by mid-July.

 Xilinx changes programmable logic landscape with expanded Virtex-II Pro family
Xilinx has expanded the Virtex-II ProTM FPGA family with five new devices and new price points. The new Virtex-II Pro devices expand the family to ten, with the largest of the new devices setting new records for logic, memory, DSP, processing, and I/O capacity. Xilinx is able to respond to the customer demand, seen following its Programmable World 2002 event held in April, with these new members due to the successful delivery of the tools, the initial devices, and the process, as well as the acceleration to 300-mm wafers. Also announced were new price points for the family. With the new pricing, Virtex-II Pro FPGAs deliver cost savings of 40 percent over any other competitive FPGA offerings of comparable logic cell, memory density, and performance.

 SGI Trusted IRIX offers secure operating system for government and commercial sectors
The National Information Assurance Partnership's (NIAP) Common Criteria Evaluation and Validation Scheme (CCEVS) has successfully evaluated and validated the SGI Trusted IRIX 6.5 operating system with conformance to the National Security Agency Information Systems Security Organisation's (ISSO) Labeled Security Protection Profile (LSPP). NIAP CCEVS has also successfully evaluated the SGI standard IRIX 6.5 operating system software with conformance to the ISSO's Controlled Access Protection Profile (CAPP) against the International Common Criteria for Information Technology Security Evaluation.

The 1024-processor SGI Origin 3800 shared-memory supercomputer, located at NASA Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, California, has been upgraded with faster MIPS R14000A microprocessors running at 600 MHz. The increased power of the 1024-processor SGI machine, the most powerful high-performance computing system used by NASA scientists to date, is part of a NASA computing grid that is delivering more computing cycles to the nationwide scientific community that it serves.

Platform Computing Inc. has made a significant equity investment in Powerllel Corporation, a provider of advanced parallel processing software for the financial services industry. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Located in New York City, Powerllel develops advanced parallel computing software that distributes and processes computationally intensive applications across multiple systems to accelerate and improve the accuracy of results.  France first in the TOP500?
With all the excitment about the Earth Simulator, the "Computenik" that is bound to become number one in next week's release of the TOP500 list that will be reveiled in Heidelberg at ISC2002, we are being distracted from a number of other changes we can expect in the list. In Europe, for instance, the number one position has been taken for a number of lists by a German supercomputer. Before that, it were UK machines holding the first position in Europe. But do not forget that the large Compaq AlphaServer SC ES45 at CEA in France, already showed sustained performance of 1.3 Tflop/s on large real applications in December last year.
