 Compaq enters Blade "running"
In a press meeting in Munich Compaq disclosed it activities in the adaptive infrastructure. It consists of software tools and ProLiant based hardware blades. Furthermore Compaq described the Blade roadmap of one, two and four processor blades.

 HP selects KPNQwest for global ATM and IP services in Europe
Hewlett-Packard Company's European network will migrate onto the KPNQwest ATM network with links to the USA and Asia. The multi-million three-year contract with KPNQwest's integrated IP services and EuroRings infrastructure covers the connection of a large number of ATM sites, as well as the provision of IP Transit services.

 First part of SP supercomputer extension arrived in Amsterdam
The IBM SP at the academic supercomputing centre in Amsterdamentered a second phase in its existence, exactly according to plan. The first extension is a fact now. At the beginning In January 2002, besides the three existing towers, two new ones with Regatta-(p690) processors were placed. Each tower contains one node with 32 Power4-processors, with a clock cycle of 1,1 GHz. This adds 280 Gigaflop/s to the existing peak performance of 210 Gflop/s, doubling the capacity of the system. Each node contains 32 Gbyte of shared memory.

 Heidelberg Supercomputer conference programme available
The programme from Europe's main supercomputer event, the International Supercomputer Conference 2002, that will be held in June in the German town of Heidelberg, is available. Keynote will be delivered by Monika Henzinger from Google, with a presentation called" Indexing the Web: A Challenge for Supercomputing". Main conference topics are Grid computing, petaflop/s computing and supercomputing centres. A pre-conference one-day tutorial provides an overview of the current state of Grid computing.

 Star Bridge Systems introduces innovative EDA tool products
Salt Lake City based supercomputer manufacturer Star Bridge Systems unveiled its HeadStart FPGA Designer and Alpha Series Emulator tools at DesignCon 2002 in Santa Clara, California. DesignCon is the annual show for vendors and users of electronic automation design (EDA) tools and related products. These tools are used to create new chip-based products for communications, video graphics, audio and data transformation.

 Internet will become platform for Grid Computing
In a keynote speech at LinuxWorld, New York, William M. Zeitler, senior vice president and group executive of IBM Server Group, predicted that the innovation of Linux and the open movement will transform e-business, ending forever the days when vendors can use a proprietary platform to retain control over customers.

 Top California Technology Research Centers Cal-(IT)2 and CalNGI collaborate on Next-Generation Internet
The California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Cal-(IT)2) and the southern California Next Generation Internet (CalNGI) initiative are teaming up to develop and test applications that will run on future iterations of the World Wide Web. The new partners will collaborate with California companies through the recently-opened CalNGI Application Center at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC). To launch their new partnership, Cal-(IT)2 and CalNGI co-sponsored a workshop on January 24 in San Diego called "Demystifying Internet Quality of Service."

 Clarkson University wins Linux Mainframe from IBM
Clarkson University has been awarded a Linux-enabled IBM mainframe as the winner of IBM's Linux Scholar Challenge. Clarkson University in Potsdam, New York, received the highest overall average score among 669 universities enrolled in the challenge, with the greatest number of students submitting the most innovative Linux applications.

EDS, together with Sun Microsystems, the Cobalt Group and Killdara Corporation, has launched a new data exchange platform designed to address IT compatibility and data integration for automotive dealerships. EDS made the announcement at the 2002 convention of the National Automobile Dealers Association in New Orleans.

 Sun Cluster 3.0 software enhanced
Sun enhanced the Sun Cluster 3.0 software adding dynamic reconfiguration support for Sun Enterprise 10000, enabling the addition, removal or changing of hardware resources such as processors, memory and I/O devices without any downtime. Furthermore it has features to make denial of service attacks more difficult.

 Visual Area Networking from SGI
SGI has launched Visual Area Networking. The vision is to enable universal access to advanced visualisation using any computing device, over standard networks. The new products include graphics infrastructure software, graphics hardware and desktop systems that make this vision a reality. The new software, OpenGL Vizserver 2.0, will allow users to interact with visualisation supercomputers individually or as a collaborative community of users, from anywhere in the world.  Samuel J. Palmisano elected IBM CEO and Louis V. Gerstner, Jr. to remain chairman through 2002
The IBM board of directors has elected Samuel J. Palmisano chief executive officer of the company effective March 1, 2002. Mr. Palmisano, who currently is IBM president and chief operating officer, will remain president. As CEO, Mr. Palmisano succeeds Louis V. Gerstner, Jr., who will remain IBM chairman through the end of 2002.

 U.S. army uses Onyx 3400 powered Immersive training environment
The U.S. Army is using a visualization system powered by an SGI Onyx 3400 high-performance graphics system to create highly realistic training simulations that will help prepare troops for effective decision-making in foreign conflict zones. The system from Mechdyne Corporation and SGI is located at the Institute for Creative Technologies (ICT), Marina del Re, a partnership between the University of Southern California and the Army. It features a wraparound curved screen with a 150-degree horizontal field of view and surround sound.

 New high-end SGI Onyx 3000 system
SGI launched a new top end graphics and visualization system, the SGI Onyx 3000 visualization series with InfinitePerformance graphics subsystem. The new systems deliver the world's fastest interactive graphics performance with high image quality, flexibility and affordability, the company claims.
