European Commission launches new action line called Presence Research
Brussels 17 January 2002 Recently, the European Commission organised a specific information day in Brussels for action line
VI.2.2: Presence Research. This "pro-active initiative" resides under the programme part
Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) within the IST-Programme. In general, it constitutes a cross-fertilisation of KA 3 "Multimedia Content and Tools" and KA 4 "Essential Technologies and Infrastructures" from the IST-Programme.
The FET projects are characterised by:
- Long term research of on average 3 years
- High risk level
- Results with large industrial and social impact
- Collaboration between universities and industry
Projects in the domain of "presence" (the sense of being there) consist of the following research:
- The experience of projecting one's mind through media to other places, people and designed environments.
- Creating interactive systems that allow humans to escape the boundaries of space and time for communicating, learning, entertainment, commerce and remote actions.
- Understanding the underlying neural processes, socio-cultural aspects and ethical considerations.
The Commission would like researchers from the following discplines to enter in a consortium:
- Psychology and cognitive sciences
- Psychoacoustics, haptics and multisensory aspects
- Neuroscience and neurophysiology
- Computer science and telecommunication engineering
- Artificial intelligence
- Hardware technologies
- Media, arts and design
- Phenomenology
Research topics for this call in the area of presence include:
- Parametrisation and representation
- Designing optimal experiences (e.g. FLOW)
- Telepresence
- Haptic presence
- Coherent multi-level theory of presence
- Long term effects of living with a VR system
