European Commission launches new action line called Presence Research

Brussels 17 January 2002 Recently, the European Commission organised a specific information day in Brussels for action line VI.2.2: Presence Research. This "pro-active initiative" resides under the programme part Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) within the IST-Programme. In general, it constitutes a cross-fertilisation of KA 3 "Multimedia Content and Tools" and KA 4 "Essential Technologies and Infrastructures" from the IST-Programme.

The FET projects are characterised by:

  • Long term research of on average 3 years
  • High risk level
  • Results with large industrial and social impact
  • Collaboration between universities and industry

Projects in the domain of "presence" (the sense of being there) consist of the following research:

The Commission would like researchers from the following discplines to enter in a consortium:

  • Psychology and cognitive sciences
  • Psychoacoustics, haptics and multisensory aspects
  • Neuroscience and neurophysiology
  • Computer science and telecommunication engineering
  • Artificial intelligence
  • Hardware technologies
  • Media, arts and design
  • Phenomenology

Research topics for this call in the area of presence include:

  • Haptic presence
  • Coherent multi-level theory of presence
  • Long term effects of living with a VR system
