EnterTheGrid, available on the web at http://EnterTheGrid.com was officially launched during the Global Grid Forum 1 event in Amsterdam in March 2001 and has since evolved into the largest catalogue of Grid Computing related items in the world. It lists all the companies, projects and software available for the Grid Computing community.
Unique to EnterTheGrid compared to other directories, is that it is moderated by an experienced team of editors. Hence, EnterTheGrid not only lists projects, but also but also gives up to date information about the status. All items listed have a short, edited description.
On the occasion of the Global Grid Forum 5 event in Edinburgh, the renewed EnterTheGrid will be inaugurated. This new catalogue has a better, easier to use lay-out. In addition a software repository has been added with knowledge management facilities. Software can be listed for instance in relation to Grid Architecture. There you can immediately see how software fits in the larger picture, where the most software is available, and which part of the Grid architecture does not have much choice in software, yet.
From another view point, one can see whether software is specifically designed for the computational Grid, the Data Grid or the Knowledge Grid. Still far more software is available for the Computational Grid than for the other Grid types.
Want to know where the most of the Grid software originates from? Take another view point and the catalogue will show you that the US still lead, with Germany in second position, for instance.
"The kowledge management part of EnterTheGrid is still in a rather experimental phase", says Ad Emmen, Editor-in-Chief of EnterTheGrid. "We are actively seeking partnerships with companies, projects and R & D programme managers to help improve it. Not only do we want to add more software, but we also want to improve the classification-schemes which are at the core of our knowledge management tools. These schemes will evolve with the Grid itself and with our growing knowledge thereof."
In a related release, EnterTheGrid announced a partnership with Dothill, who will provide storage to power the EnterTheGrid server.
EnterTheGrid is powered by the G-VMP/KM knowledge management engine designed by Genias Benelux bv headquartered in The Netherlands. It is based on XML, MPEG-7 and XSLT technology.
