Fraunhofer Research Center Birlinghofen - SCAIMunich 12 December 2002 Dr. Linden from the well-known HPC Institute SCAI presented their activities.
SCAI has about 100 employees, 80 of them scientists. About 6 million euro is the institution funding, 4 million comes from 3rd party companies. The institute covers 3 areas: numerical simulations (engineering science, fast algorithms, climate, data mining, crash simulation and multi-disciplinary coupling), bio-informatics, and optimisation. Dr. Linden presented 2D clothing cut problems. After the run of 60 minutes, the material usage goes up to 86%. Now, they are transferring the model to 3D, then they can solve packing problems.
