 US Federal government announces first federal eGov health information exchange standards
The Departments of Health and Human Services (HHS), Defense (DoD) and Veterans Affairs (VA) have announced the first set of uniform standards for the electronic exchange of clinical health information to be adopted across the federal government. These standards are part of the foundation of the National Health Information Infrastructure that will serve consumers, patients, health care providers and public health professionals.

 HIMSS supports adoption of uniform health information standards for federal government
The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) supports the announcement, by Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy G. Thompson, of the adoption of uniform standards for the electronic exchange of clinical information within the federal government. The departments of Health and Human Services (HHS), Defense (DoD) and Veterans Affairs (VA) are the three agencies leading the way in this initiative, laying the groundwork for all federal agencies to use the same information technology standards for sharing clinical information.

 Höchstleistungsrechnen or Highest Performance Computing in Germany - Part 1
As this year the John von Neumann Institute for Computing (NIC)/ZAM at the Research Centre in Jülich will install its IBM Regatta system later this year and there will be an acquisition decision at HLRS (Höchstleistungsrechenzentrum Stuttgart), it is time to give a detailed overview on what is going on in Germany in HPC. I will give in this series some historical and political background, the actual machinery and applications at the centres and the planning of new machines as well as the commissions of the German Research Society and the Wissenschaftsrat.  Höchstleistungsrechnen in Germany Part 2: John von Neumann Institute for Computing and Computer Centre Garching of Max Planck Society
In this part, I describe two Höchstleistungsrechenzentren in the Research. The John von Neumann Institute for Computing (NIC) is located at Research Centre Jülich and is operated by ZAM (Central Institute for Applied Mathematics). The Max-Planck-Institute for Plasmaphysics operates the Computer Centre Garching of the Max Planck Society. Although there are local computer centres of Max Planck Society, for example in Stuttgart, here the biggest machines are installed. Both Supercomputer centres use big IBM Regatta systems. At NIC, they have to wait until the new computer room will have been finalised, then the whole, acquired system can be installed.

 Höchstleistungsrechnen in Germany Part 3: Climat Research in Hamburg and Leibnizrechenzentrum in Munich
In this part, two centres with a vector oriented architecture are described. The HöchstLeistungsRechenzentrum für die Erdsystemforschung (HPC Centre for Earth System Research), HLRE, in Hamburg uses a NEC SX-6 vector supercomputer. The Höchstleistungsrechenzentrum Bavaria (HLRB) is operated by the Leibnizrechenzentrum (Leibnizcomputercentre) of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences in Munich. They run a pseudo vectorsupercomputer Hitachi SR8000-F1.

 Commerzbank AG consolidates its UNIX systems by new Sun Fire servers
A lot of financial services providers focus in cost reduction in the information processing with the highest priority. Thus the Commerzbank AG, Frankfurt, started the cost reduction initiative "Efficient IT Production" in 2001. It should result in a slim organisation and optimised operation. The Commerzbank checked its installed base, 19 Sun Enterprise 10000, 5 Fujitsu-Siemens Computers Primepowers and several midrange servers. Both vendors offered proposals for consolidation concepts and offerings. Commerzbank decided to accept the Sun package for cost reduction, the removal of the computer centre, and the performance improvements. It was the most economic offering.

 Commerzbank AG consolidates its UNIX systems by new Sun Fire Servers - Part 2
The Commerzbank AG, Frankfurt, started the cost reduction initiative "Efficient IT Production" in 2001 and resulted in a slim organisation and optimised operation with a higher computer performance. The winner in the game of two, Fujitsu-Siemens Computers and Sun Microsystems was Sun. It installed seven Sun Fire E15K with 900 MHz, and 9 Sun Fire E10K with 466 MHz. In this second part, I discussed the topics why the Commerzbank chose Solaris, of which the applications are running and why they follow the ITIL (IT Infrastructure Library) basics for the service and operations management.

 HPC: Strategy and Directions at IBM
During Scicomp7 Peg Williams, Director AIX and HPC Software Development gave an overview on IBM's HPC vision concerning the hardware and software roadmap as well as the success and challenges. The HPC HW Strategy is based on processors, Power4, Power5, Power6, the systems like Regatta (32-way) and Squadron (64-way) and the interconnects, SP Switch, SP Switch 2 and Federation Switch. The Software side covers the data management, GPFS, message passing MPI, LAPI, resource management LoadLeveler, Tooling, systems management PSSP, CSM. The drive is towards zero downtime and zero systems administration costs - autonomous computing.

 Dutch National Aerospace Laboratory NLR enhances its information systems for aerospace research
A new NEC supercomputer is to boost the Dutch National Aerospace Laboratory (NLR) aerospace research capabilities. The new system is the first TX7 series computer that NEC HPCE has installed in Europe since the introduction of its new series in January 2003. It will enhance one of the world's most advanced general purpose computing facilities for aerospace research.

 Cobion to unveil anti-spam product for businesses and home Web filtering product for ISPs
Cobion Corporation, a provider of content security software, will unveil OrangeBox Mail 2.0 and OrangeBox Web Home, two new anti-spam and Web filtering products for businesses and ISPs. In contrast to other e-mail filters, OrangeBox Mail 2.0 combines multiple techniques to block spam and junk mail. This ten-level checking procedure prevents false positives, or the inadvertent over-blocking of legitimate e-mails. Cobion maintains a global spam database that is updated by its 1000 processor-server data centre in Kassel, Germany.

 Oxford University unravel mystery of the universe with help of a Dell supercomputer system
Oxford University's physics department will implement a Dell high-performance computing cluster (HPCC) solution to conduct research that will assist in a project aimed to unravel the secrets of the universe. The cluster of Dell PowerEdge servers will analyse and store data used to investigate mass, inertia and antimatter, thereby helping to understand the behaviour and effects of elementary particles on the universe.

 iCAPTUR4E Centre uses IBM technology to study heart, lung and blood vessel diseases
IBM and Vancouver-based iCAPTUR4E Research Centre are teaming up to investigate the linkages between genetic and environmental influences on the leading causes of death in North America which are heart, lung and blood vessel diseases. The collaboration, announced at the Bio-IT World Conference and Expo, brings together the world-renowned researchers of the iCAPTUR4E Centre, a partnership of St. Paul's Hospital, the Vancouver Hospital and Health Sciences Centre and the University of British Columbia (UBC), and IBM scientists and state-of-the-art information technology (IT).

 Reservoir simulation pushed beyond the limits with Athos and SGI Altix 3000
IFP, Beicip-Franlab and SGI have made available Athos on high-performance SGI Altix platform based on Intel Itanium 2 processors.  Linux Networx Cluster used to investigate Iceland's weather and geothermal energy sources
The Icelandic Energy Authority (IEA), in conjunction with Iceland's Institute for Meteorological Research (IMR), is using an Intel-based Linux Networx cluster to boost its computing performance for 3D simulations of geothermal reservoirs and Icelandic climate conditions. With these capabilities, the IEA and IMR can accurately determine where geothermal power plants should be built and investigate the cause for disruptive weather events such as heavy precipitation and strong windstorms.

 Audi chooses IBM's Shark to drive its storage network
Audi AG has selected the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Storage Server codenamed "Shark" to accelerate a heterogeneous storage area network (SAN) to help manage and protect data for the more than 700,000 automobiles Audi produces annually. Audi chose IBM's Enterprise Storage Server (ESS) to support a storage-networking infrastructure designed to efficiently move automobiles on the production line by enabling engineers and auto assembly workers to have the information they need in real time.

 Xilinx announces breakthrough 10 Gbps technology
Xilinx has demonstrated serial technology at 10 Gbps on a single channel. Xilinx claims it is the first PLD vendor to demonstrate 10 Gbps technology using a standard CMOS logic process. The demonstration is part of the the Xilinx Serial Tsunami initiative. Based on Non-Return to Zero (NRZ) signaling, this technology supports industry-leading chip-to-chip, chip-to-module, and serial backplane applications. Xilinx plans to deploy its groundbreaking 10 Gbps circuitry in products slated for delivery this year.

 Germany's Waterway Engineering and Research Institute chooses SGI supercomputers to meet simulation challenges of the future
Germany's Waterway Engineering and Research Institute (BAW) heavily invested in SGI technology for high-performance computing (HPC) to meet challenges in future numerical simulation projects. BAW's coastal division in Hamburg, which designs, monitors, analyses and repairs all waterways and tidal flood zones in the country's coastal areas, has installed two of the new SGI Origin 3000 servers. The two supercomputers harness the power of 288 MIPS processors and run the high-performance SGI IRIX operating system.

 University of Tokyo's Earthquake Research Institute set to begin production runs with scalable Linux supercluster
The University of Tokyo's Earthquake Research Institute (ERI) has received a 108-processor SGI Altix system to be used as a shared supercomputing resource for ERI researchers. The recently delivered supercluster, set to begin production runs later this month, marks the first purchase and delivery of an SGI Altix system worldwide and the first full-scale high-end Linux OS-based parallel processing system in Japan. Launched in January, the SGI Altix family of superclusters features the 64-bit Intel Itanium 2 processor and the Linux operating system.

 NEC and RIKEN realize world's first quantum entanglement in a 2-bit solid-state device
In experimentation conducted jointly by the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research (RIKEN) and NEC Corporation (NEC), a state of quantum entanglement was successfully created between two solid state quantum bit (qubit). This is a world's first, and represents a major step toward the realisation of practical quantum computing. This result was achieved by the research group headed by Jaw-Shen Tsai of the NEC Fundamental Research Laboratory, and the RIKEN Frontier Research System (Macroscopic Quantum Coherence Laboratory). The details of the present research results were published in the February 20 issue of the British science journal Nature.

 "Sandbox Gridding" feasible solution for compute-intensive bio-informatics tasking?
Small health care and bio-informatics companies with a relatively limited staff need sufficient computing power to process their ongoing protein structure analysis projects in the light of drug discovery and research to fight contemporary diseases. To cope with this type of challenge, the answer may be found in Grid computing applications for bio-informatics tasks. The Danish health care company Novo Nordisk is a typical example of how Grid implementation can contribute to better treatment plans for diabetes, haemostasis management, growth hormone therapy, and hormone replacement therapy. Fiber optic links between Los Angeles and Chicago have been "lit up" to form the cross-country network backbone for the National Science Foundation's $88 million TeraGrid project.  Axceleon and Power Technologies deliver grid computing for global electricity transmission company
Powerlink Queensland, a high-voltage energy transmission network, has deployed Axceleon's EnFuzion along with Power Technologies Inc. (PTI)'s Power System Simulator for Engineering (PSS/E). Network utilities, such as Powerlink, currently use EnFuzion to automate and speed up calculations of power transfer limits throughout their networks. By deploying EnFuzion, these corporations are able to save a great deal of time and resources.

 Platform computing Grid software powers scientific research for U.S. Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory
Platform Computing Inc.'s Grid computing software will be used to power the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Pacific Northwest National Laboratory's (PNNL) $24.5 million, 11.4-teraflop HP supercomputer. Originally announced by HP in April 2002, the PNNL project is expected to create one of the world's most powerful Linux-based supercomputers, allowing researchers to apply an advanced computational infrastructure to address "Grand Challenge" scale environmental research problems.

 University of Texas selects Force10 Networks for high performance campus computing grid
The Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) at the University of Texas (UT) at Austin has selected the E-Series switch/router to provide a next-generation, inter-campus grid computing infrastructure. The E-Series will initially aggregate Gigabit Ethernet connections from HPC computing resources located at TACC, and connects at 10-Gigabit Ethernet speeds across the Greater Austin Area Telecommunications Network (GAATN) to TACC and UT HPC resources located on the main UT campus.

 IBM open sources software for sharing life sciences data
IBM has contributed software for specifying a common method of naming and locating Life Sciences data. The software - called the Life Sciences Identifier (LSID) Resolver - provides a common way to name and find biological data, such as protein structures and DNA sequences. The software is designed to make it far simpler for scientists and bioinformaticians to integrate information from many locations to aid bioinformatics research to facilitate drug discovery.

 Distributed Resource Management Application API proposal for Grid computing released at Global Grid Forum 7
Sun Microsystems has completed the proposed specification for the Distributed Resource Management Application API (DRMAA), one of the first specifications to enable the development and deployment of high performance Grid applications. Providing "write-once" capabilities to any DRM system that supports DRMAA, the specification makes it possible for new applications - both enterprise and technical - to be used in a Grid environment, thereby dramatically expanding the reach of Grid computing.

 IBM's Linux-only mainframe selected by University of Florida for Grid computing research
The University of Florida has selected the Linux-only IBM eServer zSeries 800 as the heart of the university's Advanced Computing and Information Systems (ACIS) laboratory at the school's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in Gainesville, Florida. The sale of the z800 was made by IBM Business Partner Cornerstone Systems Inc. The university is the 1000th customer of IBM's entry-class mainframe, the z800, which began shipping in March of last year. A collaborative grant from the National Science Foundation funded the purchase.

 Abilene Backbone Network upgrade passes transcontinental milestone
The first transcontinental path in the Abilene network's nationwide upgrade is now in service. When completed later this year, the upgrade will quadruple the capacity of more than 13,000 miles of network to 10 gigabits per second, more than 15,000 times faster than a typical home broadband connection. Qwest Communications International, Juniper Networks and Indiana University are providing equipment and services to implement the network upgrade.
