In number of machines, Europe houses 31% of the world's supercomputers. In power it is only 22%. The US is dominating with over 50% of the TOP500 installations and accumulated power.
In Europe, Germany has 54 installations, followed by the UK with 36, France with 18, and Italy with 14.
The largest supercomputer in Europe is the HP AlphaServer SC ES45/1 GHz at CEA in France. Second is the IBM pSeries 690 Turbo 1.3GHz at HPCx (Edinburgh) in the UK. Third and fourth are two IBM pSeries 690 Turbo 1.3GHz machines at ECMWF in the UK. A same type of machine is at Max-Planck-Gesellschaft MPI/IPP Garching in Germany. Apart from the HP at CEA, there is one other non-IBM machine in the Europan TOP10: a Hitachi at Leibniz Rechenzentrum Muenchen in Germany.
Worldwide, HP has the most machines in the TOP500, even more so in Europe. Here it is clearly leading with 67 installations. IBM is second with 44 supercomputers in Europe, followed by SGI (10), Cray (8), Self-made (70), SUN (5) and NEC (5).
