The cluster architecture of an X1 Database Performance Cluster enables it to incrementally scale according to capacity requirements. As the database capacity requirements increase over time, superior performance of the database is maintained by simply adding nodes to the cluster. The X1 DPC achieves linear scalability by performing database queries exclusively in RAM, without the need to access hard disk storage. The X1 DPC works with any existing SQL Server application.
According to Keith Murphy, VP of Sales for Dolphin, "WulfKit's SCI (Scalable Coherent Interface) high-speed memory-to-memory interconnect performance makes it ideal for data-intensive applications such as the X1 Cluster. WulfKit is designed to deliver consistent high performance as it scales, which the X1 DPC application required to achieve its performance goals."
Each 1U rack-mountable node contains two Intel Xeon processors and six gigabytes of DDR RAM. A fully configured X1 Cluster consists of 256 nodes and 512 processors and supports 1.5 terabytes of RAM.
WulfKit is an implementation of the IEEE 1496 Scalable Coherent Interface (SCI), a memory-to-memory interconnect standard. Dolphin Interconnect Solutions has developed a family of high-speed interconnects cards that exploit key features of the SCI standard to achieve superior performance, both in data transfer rates and latency. WulfKit and WulfKit3 high-performance interconnect systems are a combination of a SCI network interface card (NIC), SCI cables, and a powerful message passing interface (MPI) and cluster management tools provided by Scali of Oslo, Norway.
