SURFnet builds test network on basis of dark fibre

Utrecht 14 April 2003 SURFnet, the internet provider for higher education and research in the Netherlands, has started rolling out a test network. It has concluded contracts with various suppliers of managed dark fibre. The separate test network allows testing of new network technologies without burdening the production network, SURFnet5. The roll-out of the network takes place within the context of the GigaPort project.

In a European tender dark fibre has been acquired for the test network on the following links:

  • Utrecht-Amsterdam;
  • Utrecht-Delft;
  • Utrecht-Eindhoven;
  • Amsterdam-Delft;
  • Enschede-Eindhoven and
  • Enschede-Amsterdam.

The optical fibre is delivered by BT Nederland (Utrecht-Amsterdam, Utrecht-Delft, Enschede-Eindhoven en Enschede-Amsterdam), KPN Telecom (Utrecht-Eindhoven) and Global Crossing (Amsterdam-Delft).

SURFnet network equipment will be connected to the delivered fibre-optic pairs. The test network will include several types of equipment that are also used in SURFnet5, such as DWDM equipment (dense wavelength-division multiplexing), Ethernet switches and routers. Besides these, new equipment based on optical technologies will also be tested. The technology tests that can be performed on this network will form the basis for the successor(s) of the present SURFnet5 network.
