AMD and Intel Roadmaps
Munich 12 December 2002 Again AMD and Intel entered the ring to discuss their approaches in new processor technology.
AMD
The new 64-bit processor Opteron runs 32 bit old applications in native mode. It is possible to run 32 bit or 64 bit programmes or both parallel on the 64 bit system. The porting of IBM's DB2 was realised within two days because of these features. The HyperTransport allows a bi-directional bandwidth of 3.2 Gbit/s. SuSE and Red Hat Linux support Opteron. 64-bit Fortran, C, C++ compilers come from Portland Group. The project Red Storm will connect 10000s of AMD processors.
Intel
In 2007, Intel expects a clock rate of 10 GHz, in 2010 30 GHz. Intel allows Infiniband at PCI Express interfaces, first systems in 2003. An interesting aspect is Intel's compiler technology. After acquiring Kuck Associates, their know how enters the Intel Compiler, Thread Checker, Thread Profiler and OpenMP. Intel Compiler V7 was delivered in November 2002. It has an improved stability and optimisation, supports Itanium 2, more OpenMP support, improved C99 standard.
