Grid Computing - the IBM View

Munich 13 January 2003 In December 2002 IBM organised a workshop on the topic Grid Computing at its Lab in Böblingen. The Programme covered the aspects IBM Grid Strategy, Grid usage today, and Grid developments. Ten talks, from Grid users from NIC, Jülich, and FZ Karlsruhe too, highlighted different approaches and IBM's view on Grid Computing. It contains not only Grid computing but autonomous, self-healing computing and computing on demand. Some of the talks are covered in this first part of the Grid event.

In the beginning, Heinz-Hubert Weusthof, Programme Director, Solutions & Technology, IBM eServer Software Development, guided the participants through the programme. Herbert Kircher, General Manager IBM Germany Development GmbH, and Francis Kuhlen, Vice President Systems Sales, IBM EMEA Central Region presented their ideas on the Grid.

Herbert Kircher discussed a new view on computing. Today, there are more mainframes than in the 80s. The machines form a big virtual computer. Business on demand is a new way of computing. We are in the post PC era.

Francis Kuhlen highlighted the basics and the strategies of grid computing. The new view in computing is like the manufacturing industry, make or buy. Only 10% of the available and installed resources are used. He gave an overview of the relation of e-business on demand with its technical basics and presented the interconnect of the approaches of autonomic computing, grid computing and utility-based computing as an infrastructure of future models of IT services. His talk gave a view of grid in scientific, technical and commercial environment.
