Memories - The Technology Demonstrator Network at Supercomputing Europe 1994
Supercomputing Europe 1994 in Munich can be seen as a milestone in HPC/Grid development in the world. An International team lead by CERN's Arie van Praag, layed out the fastest computer network of that time, creating the world's largest "virtual" supercomputer. As part of the Technology Demonstrator Display, a number of distributed applications did run during the conference. It took the Americans a year to catch up. SGI announces midrange Altix server

In a press meeting SGI today announced the midrange server Altix 350 with one to 16 processors, Intel Itanium 2 processors with four different clocks and three different cache sizes. It is dedicated for work groups. Besides its traditional markets, scientific and media, SGI plans to sell these machines via partners in the commercial markets.

Dot Hill ships 20,000 units of its latest generation storage systems
Dot Hill has shipped over 20,000 units of its rugged, compact storage systems approximately one year after introduction. Dot Hill markets its storage systems commercially under the SANnet II brand name. Select OEM and SI partners also market the products under private brands. IBM and Topspin Communications have signed a multi-year agreement to integrate advanced Topspin InfiniBand switch technology on IBM systems, and resell Topspin InfiniBand switches to customers worldwide. The five-year agreement gives IBM access to current and future versions of Topspin's industry-leading server switches and software for use across the IBM eServer and TotalStorage product line.

SGI reports second quarter results
Silicon Graphics has announced results for its second fiscal quarter, which ended December 26, 2003. GAAP revenue for the quarter was $237.9 million, compared with $218.0 million for the first quarter ended September 26, 2003. Gross margin was 46.7% in the second quarter, up from 43.4% in the first quarter. Operating expenses for the second quarter were $113.1 million, compared with $138.2 million for the first quarter. SGI's second-quarter operating loss was $2.1 million, compared with an operating loss of $43.6 million in the first quarter. The company's second quarter results are consistent with the preliminary results announced on January 8, 2004. Read further...

Silicon Graphics and Voltaire will jointly provide SGI Altix server customers with Voltaire InfiniBand solutions, enabling easy creation of high-speed clusters. Voltaire's InfiniBand product line will be particularly useful to customers seeking to cluster multiple SGI Altix 350 server nodes. Sun Microsystems Inc., creator of Java software technology, rocketed past NCR/Teradata, IBM and HP as the infrastructure platform for the top two data warehouse implementations in the Number of Rows category, according to the Top Ten Programme results from Winter Corporation, a consulting service to major corporations, top universities and governments worldwide to help them increase the value of their investments in very large databases (VLDBs), technology and products. UK/French collaboration on Grids started

At the UK/France Workshop on Grid Computing in November 2003, several groups disccused possible cooperation between France and the UK concerning Grid and e-Science. The application and middleware groups also had some interesting SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) analysis of Frenhc and UK Grid developments.

Grid Computing in France

At the UK/French workshop on Grid computing in November 2003, Antoine Petit, of theDirection de la Rechercheof theMinistère délégué à la Recherche et aux Nouvelles Technologies, gave an overview of the French initiatives. In France, there are several complementary national actions with a light informal coordination. There is a programme to support Infrastructures and there is a programme to support the research and development projects that can include industrial partners. A third line is support to fundamental research projects without funded industrial partners.

Two year French Grid testbed e-Toile publishes final scientific report
A number of resources located in several laboratories in academic and industrial French organisations have been connected to form an experimental Grid platform callede-Toile. Goal was to explore emerging Grid technologies. The project consumed 500 man months and euro 13.6 million. e-Toile was put on top of the high-speed Renater network. e-Toile has developed software framework for better exploring this Grid testbed. Most software tools were built around Globus. Several scientific communities have ported there applications and evaluated the network. Apple previews Xgrid technology

Apple has previewed Xgrid, a computational clustering technology from Apple's Advanced Computation Group (ACG). Xgrid helps scientists and others working in compute intensive environments to fully utilize all IT resources, including desktops and servers, by creating a grid enabled "virtual" IT environment that takes advantage of unused computing capacity to run batch and workload processing. Available as a free beta download, Xgrid brings Apple's legendary ease-of-use to computational clustering by providing the easiest way to run compute intensive applications, such as the popular gene-sequencing application BLAST, on multiple Macs using Apple's Rendezvous networking technology.

40% of enterprise companies consider Grid computing according to new Evans Data report

In what may be a sign that the long downturn for technology is coming to an end, e-commerce projects lead plans for this year in enterprise development project planning. The new Enterprise Development Management Issues survey from Evans Data has seen business-to-business e-commerce increase 40% in the last six months for planned projects and a move from 11th place to the 1st place ranking. Sixteen percent of enterprise companies plan to use Grid computing instead of a clustering environment and another 24% are considering the technology.

Voltaire, a provider of high performance InfiniBand solutions, has launched a high performance, standards-based, scalable InfiniBand solution for Oracle Database 10g for the Japanese market. Voltaire's partners, Hitachi High-Technologies Corporation (Hitachi-HT) and Hitachi Information Technology Co. Ltd. (Hitachi-IT) will distribute the solution which is designed for emerging enterprise Grid computing. Hitachi System & Services Ltd. TransAtlantic research led to new Internet speed record

Scientists from Europe and the US teamed up and set a new record for sending data across the Atlantic in October 2003. Their Internet2 Landspeed Record results showed a huge increase both in the flow of data across wide area networks and between local systems closely linked together. Version 3.1.0 (Matterhorn) of the Rocks cluster distribution is released and now supports three processor families: Intel IA-32, Intel Itanium Processor Family, and AMD Opteron. This is the released version of software that was used to build a fully-functioning 128-node Grid-enabled cluster in under 2 hours on opening at SC2003 in Phoenix, Arizona. Rocks is developed by the Grid and Cluster Computing Group at the US SDSC and by partners at the University of California, Berkeley, Scalable Systems in Singapore, and individual open-source software developers.
