| DOE leadership-class computing capability for science will be developed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory |
|
Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham announced that the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) will grant Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and its development partners, Cray , IBM and Silicon Graphics, $25 million in funding to begin to build a 50 Tflop/s science research supercomputer. The department selected ORNL from four proposals received from its non-weapon national labs.

The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) announced that the Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC) would receive $650,000 to provide technical leadership and programme management to Mississippi State University (MSU) as it develops and improves high performance computing systems for the military. OSC will also receive $1.35 million to provide technical support in Signal Image Processing and Integrated Modelling and Test Environments.

Sun Microsystems intoduced mid-range UltraSPARC IV processor-based throughput computing systems, the Sun Fire E4900 and E6900 server systems. The University of Zurich, DaimlerChrysler, and Vodafone have all upgraded to the new systems. At the University of Zurich, the UltraSPARC IV processors have increased the power of applications used for the development of numerical algorithms for physical chemistry and partial differential equations. Departments using the new Sun systems which support multithreaded computing at the University have seen large improvements in overall throughput in a number of tests.

The world's smallest computer - around a trillion can fit in a drop of water - might one day go on record again as the tiniest medical kit. Made entirely of biological molecules, this computer was successfully programmed to identify, in a test tube, changes in the balance of molecules in the body that indicate the presence of certain cancers, to diagnose the type of cancer, and to react by producing a drug molecule to fight the cancer cells.

At the GGF in Berlin, Wolfgang Boch from the European Commission provided provisional information on a number of proposals that have entered the negotiation phase for funding under the EC's IST FP6 programme. Included in the "ranked proposals" list are SIMDAT, NEXTGRID, AKOGRIMO and CoreGRID. If all goes well the projects could start in July. In Europe, there are more mobile phones than personal computers. Hence, trying to develop Grid computing on top of the mobile network seems an interesting opportunity. A consortium of European Telco's, IT-companies and universities has inititated a proposed European project, called Akogrimo, just to acomplish this within the next three years. This Next Generation Grid will build a Grid service based infrastructure, develop the middleware and use it as a test bed for three user scenarios: e-learning, e-Health and Disaster Handling and Crisis Management.
