The TOP500 lost half of its entries
Heidelberg 23 June 2004 Probably I do not have to tell you about the TOP500. Only this Monday, already 350.000 people visited the TOP500 web site to watch the new list. Nevertheless, it is always interesting to hear what the list compilers have to say. After all they spent months with looking at the numbers in all kinds of ways. Erich Strohmaier kicked off with the highlights from the TOP10. There is a new number 2, the Thunder system at Lawrence Livermore Laboratories, USA. First still is the Earth Simulator. To be in the TOP10 Strohmaier says, it takes 2000 processors or more and over 8 Tflop/s of performance. Shangai Supercomputer Centre with a Dawning system entered the TOP10 at 10th position, the first Chinese machine ever in the TOP10. Europe is back with a supercomputer at the ECMWF. (AE)

The turn-around in the TOP500 is going very fast: more than half the entries are new.

There is more analysis and background on the TOP500 in other articles in this issue and other issues of PrimeurLive!.

Erich Stohmaier presented representatives of the number 1 certificate. Why did he come over all from Japan for this piece of paper signed by the compilers? Well, he said, it could be the last time the Earth Simulator is in the first position, so I took the oppurtunity now, it may not be there in six months.

Second compiler talking was Jack Dongarra, presenting all the figures and trends concerning distribution over manufacturers, countries, etc. Of course, he notes the growth in Asia outside Japan.
