IDC published the HPC market update in total and in four different segments according to technical capability:
- systems configured and purchased to solve the largest most demanding problems technical enterprise
- systems purchased to support technical applications in throughput environments selling for 1 million Dollar or more technical divisional
- systems purchased for throughput environments selling from $250.000 to $999.999 technical department
- systems purchased for throughput environments selling for less than $250.000
The major market trends: 2003 reversed the decline with double digit growth, 12%. About $ 5.3 billion in technical servers were sold in 2003, $5.6 billion including tier 2 vendors.

The $303 Mio. of the tier 2 vendors add to the capability market, $ 18 Mio., that makes a change of -23.1%, the divisional segment, $74 Mio, a change of 14.5%, and the departmental segment, $211 Mio, a change of 46.6%. This underpins that nearly 50% of the market growth is dedicated to the departmental technical server.
