Several meteorological research projects and a workshop will launch the new Earth System Research Center (ESRC), a co-operative venture between Cray and the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). The ESRC is being established to advance the science of earth-system modelling over the East-Asia Pacific region, as well as to promote collaboration within the Korean academic community and leverage the collective knowledge of academia, government and industry. An e-Science project is enabling the use of near real-time Met Office forecasts to predict the drift of a person who has fallen overboard. Ocean currents and surface winds push the person away from his or her original location. SARIS, a software package developed by BMT Cordah Ltd., a subsidiary of British Maritime Technology Ltd. (BMT), helps the Coastguard to speed up rescue time by running a computer prediction of the person's drift pattern. Indiana University announces major National Science Foundation grant for Data Capacitor Project

Indiana University (IU) has received a $1.72 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to enhance its existing cyberinfrastructure. Cyberinfrastructure is high-performance computers, data storage systems, and advanced instruments both local, national and international all connected via high-speed networks and used extensively by IU researchers. The grant provides for the addition of substantial new infrastructure which will provide short-term storage for massive amounts of data that require analysis by IU's supercomputers.

No speed limit on the data highway yet at the Heinrich-Hertz-Institut
Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications, Heinrich-Hertz-Institut (HHI) in Berlin in co-operation with colleagues of Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd., Japan, succeeded for the first time worldwide in transferring a data rate of 2.56 Terabit per second over a glass fibre link of 160 km length and thus exceed the existing world record of 1.2 Terabit per second which had been existing for five years. Bay Microsystems and Network Equipment Technologies Inc. will jointly develop a new high speed, multiservice platform to switch and aggregate data at full line rates of 10 gigabits per second and higher.
