Where are the Grids?
Heidelberg 24 June 2005 This year, Grids had a prominent place on the ISC2005 stage. Yes, there was the DEISA project, but more positioned as a cooperation between HPC centres, and yes, there was Lofar, a sensor Grid and the closing keynote by Wolfgang Gentzsch. And there is still the confusion: is it a cluster? Is it a Grid? A little more on ZIB-DB: a meta data augmented "Grid enabled" file system and Lofar.

A technically interesting presentation related to Grid computing was the presentation by Alexander Reinefeld from ZIB Berlin. At ZIB they are creating a data management system, called ZIB-DMS, that works at a basic level: it tries to augment files with simple metadata typically atribute/value pairs to give information on what is inside a file. The metadata can then be used for searching on locating the file system.

ZIB is paying attention to integration with the existing file systems. So you can do things like "cd name=knuth" to go to a file that contains an article authored by Knuth. The system has some advanced data handling features, like collections, bi-directornal links and virtual files. It is compatible with current file systems through the NFS API and it is Grid enabled, in that it is scalable, and extensible. According to Reinefeld the system, although still experimental, works already. You can find more info on: http://zib/de/csr/

The most exciting presentation related to Grids, was the Lofar one. The vast amounts of data transferred: 0.8 Tbit/s (as much as on the American telephone systems), the vast computing resources: a spread out sensor computing network with FPGA's with a total of 116 Gbps performance and the 27.45 Tflop/s BlueGene "central processor". But we did already report on Lofar in previous issues of EnterTheGrid - Primeur Magazine.
