| Einstein generation at ISC2006 |
| Dresden 28 June 2006
Seems like the new generation, the so-called Einstein generation, can do a lot of things at the same time: MSN with 15 people, composing an SMS and looking at the Web. These skills came in handy at the opening party of ISC2006, the European Supercomputer Conference. One had to follow the Soccer game France - Spain on large screens, listen to a band or watching performing artists, play table soccer, having dinner, and try do do some networking with other participants. Main discussion topic was, the sponsor of the evening: Microsoft and what are the company's plans with supercomputing, a market never considered to be that important by the Oregon company. Most likeley it sees the HPC and cluster market which is dominated by Linux as an important early adopter market to try to stop the growth of open source. Would it not be nice to have the fastest machine in the world, the number one position in the TOP500, running Vista when the new operating system hits the street next year? One can estimate that this position costs about 100 million euro. Compare the entrance of Intel with the ASCI Red at postion 1 in the TOP 500 some time ago. Of course, building a community of HPC users running Windows helps to sustain a Windows based supercomputing Eco system. Sponsering a HPC party helps to accelerate this process.

Last year we have seen some announcements from Microsoft in the cluster area, indicating the increased interest in clusters/HPC. Also the company talked to large centres, to discuss potential collabartions of the kind we saw in the past from the other big vendors.
In the current TOP500, one can find 2 systems running Windows. Let us again have a look at that number in one year in the June 2007 TOP500 list.
