| 29th TOP500 List of world's fastest supercomputers released: DOE/LLNL BlueGene/L still no. 1 but list sees largest turnover ever |
|
The 29th edition of the closely watched TOP500 list of the world's fastest supercomputers shows a lot of shuffling among the top-ranked systems and the largest turnover among list entries in the history of the TOP500 project. The Top500 list, which is published every June and November, was released today, June 27, 2007, at the International Supercomputing Conference (ISC'07) in Dresden, Germany.

In the TOP500 list published today, which contains the fastest computers in the world, German Gauss Centre for Supercomputing holds top positions. The supercomputer HLRB-II at Leibniz-Rechenzentrum is the fastest computer in Germany and number 10 in the world. Research Centre Jülich is 2nd place in Germany with its JUBL supercomputer and 18th place worldwide. Research Centre Jülich has set itself the goal of installing a supercomputer with 220 teraflops by autumn, which will see it become the number 1 in Europe and achieve a place amongst the top three in the world. The delivery contract was signed last Monday. Together the partners of Gauss Centre for Supercomputing want to build one of the planned European Supercomputing Centre in Germany till 2009.

| IBM Blue Genes dominate list of fastest supercomputers |
|
IBM's Blue Gene/L supercomputer continued its four-year reign atop the TOP500 Supercomputer Sites list announced today. IBM systems account for 42% of the combined computational might of the planet's most powerful computers - more than any other supercomputer vendor, according to the list.

| CSC Flagship - The Cray XT4, comes on stream |
|
From the beginning of April phase one (10.6 Teraflop/s) of the Cray XT4TM, MPP, purchased by the Centre for Scientific Computing (CSC) in Finland, became operational. The final Cray XT4 configuration planned for 2008, is to deliver over 70 Teraflop/s of compute power to CSC's HPC users. (Chris Lazou)

Sun Microsystems Inc. is demonstrating innovative High Performance Computing (HPC) solutions this week at the International Supercomputing Conference in Dresden, Germany. Sun will provide a first glimpse of the Solaris 10 Operating System-based Sun Constellation System, one of the world's first open Petascale computing environments. | Tektronix successfully tests world's fastest, longest Infiniband cable from Intel |
|
Tektronix Inc., a worldwide provider of test, measurement and monitoring solutions, has successfully validated the performance of the new Intel 100 meter Infiniband cable operating at speeds up to 20 Gb/s. The world's longest InfiniBand optical cable has an electrical interface on either end and uses four serial data lanes at 5 Gb/s each. The cable will be useful in accelerating the performance of large computing clusters. The cables will be used as the part of the backbone network at the International Supercomputing Conference (ISC) show in Dresden, Germany.

Platform Computing will enable HPC Technologies to become Intel Cluster Ready through Platform Open Cluster Stack (OCS). Intel Cluster Ready is a new programme and technology designed to simplify the development, purchase, deployment, usage and management of clustered computer systems. Platform OCS is the first commercial software system used to create certified Intel Cluster Ready systems that enable the consistent delivery of scale-out application clusters. | Bull and the University of Düsseldorf join forces to design the high-performance computing systems of the future |

The Heinrich Heine University of Düsseldorf and Bull Germany have signed a two-year co-operation agreement to coincide with the commissioning of Bull's supercomputer at the University's Institute of Information and Communication Technologies (ZIM). This co-operation agreement was announced during the Dresden International Supercomputing Conference (ISC 2007), and covers the areas of visualization technologies, software components and HPC cluster technologies. The results of joint development will be gradually incorporated into Bull's product range.
