Hewlett-Packard delivers first NavyStar installation on HMS Cardiff

Bracknell, 10-06-1997 Hewlett-Packard Company has rolled-out the first phase of a new IT infrastructure, NavyStar, for the Royal Navy. As part of its overall IT strategy, the Royal Navy is deploying a new generation of non-operational networked computer systems (covering both ashore and afloat systems) in warships and Royal Fleet Auxiliary vessels. Its first installation on HMS Cardiff, comprising workstations and network hardware, has now been successfully completed.

Earlier this year, Hewlett Packard was awarded the contract to produce the first version of NavyStar. This initial version supports existing applications for accounting, office automation, engineering administration and system administration. In its final form, NavyStar will carry all Navy Functional Area applications including the logistics and engineering application 'UPKEEP'. The project is expected to last a further 18 months. Over the last five years, Hewlett Packard UK Ltd has been working on a UK defence capability in computing technology. This capability is centred on professional and project services addressing the complete project lifecycle - from specification, design, delivery through installation and support.
