Sacramento, 14 December 98 The California Department of Motor Vehicles announced today it hassuccessfully installed high-performance IBM RS/6000 computers at department headquarters and throughout its 172 field offices. The system will provide the DMV with more reliable access to driver license, photo identification, vehicle registration and Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) database information.

DMV awarded a $9.5 million contract to IBM Global Services following competitive bidding last year. DMV officials said the upgrade to Year 2000-ready IBM RS/6000 computers was necessary to improve customer service and to support increasing business volumes.

"The common goal of every team member was to ensure that DMV field offices were ready to provide service to the public at the start of the next business day," said Kim Hewitt, IBM Global Services Project Executive. "It was an extraordinary team effort that delivered exceptional results. The project was completed on-time and within budget."

"Future DMV field offices will operate in an environment that will give us direct on-line electronic access to data, thus providing fast and accurate service for the public," said Leo Verheul, Chief Information Officer of the California DMV.
