Gigabit backbone for German Research Network

Bonn 09 Sep 99 German telco DeTeSystem, is currently building the next German Gigabit Research Network (G-WiN). The order from DFN (German Research Network Association) is worth 70 million euro. The high-speed network, based on wavelength-multiplex technology, provides a set of 2.5 Gbit/s-fiber channels, resulting in 25 Gbit/s in 2001, 80 Gbit/s in 2002, and up to 120 Gbit/s in 2003.

The 29 nodes of the backbone are connected by two independent paths, to make sure the network stays up and running, even when a cable is accidently cut.

DeTeSystem, a subsidary of German Telekom, dit get tthe order after a Europan tender procedure.
