IBM RS/6000 S80 Server Scores New SAP R/3 Performance Record of 16,640 SD Benchmark Users
Somers 13 Sep 99 IBM announced record-breaking performance for SAP R/3 inter-enterprise business solutions, supporting 16,640 Sales and Distribution (SD) benchmark users in the three-tier client/server benchmark. This is 15 percent better than the nearest benchmark effort to date, with 2,240 more users. IBM also is the first to break the 5,000,000 barrier performing 5,007,000 dialog steps/hour. This is equivalent to 1,669,000 fully business-processed order line items per hour.
The SD benchmark is one of the industry's most challenging performance evaluation tests. It demonstrates the capacity of a server to process typical transactions in SAP R/3 and is a de facto standard for SAP server partners. "This benchmark test demonstrates that the IBM RS/6000 Model S80 Enterprise Server delivers unmatched performance and scalability for companies running the flagship SAP R/3 enterprise solution," said Cecelia Marrese, worldwide RS/6000 ERP segment manager. "The industry-leading performance announced today resulted from the advanced technology incorporated into the new S80, the joint efforts of IBM, SAP and Oracle, and enhancements to AIX, IBM's UNIX operating system, which is now able to expertly manage SAP user requests and fully exploit all of microprocessors in IBM's SMP systems." In the record-breaking client/server standard application benchmark announced today, the RS/6000 ran SAP R/3 Release 4.0B for sales and distribution and Oracle's 8.0.5 relational database management system on the AIX 4.3.3 operating system. The tested configuration included a 24-way RS/6000 Model S80 with 32 GB of memory as the database server, one 12-way RS/6000 Model S70 Advanced systems as the central instance, an RS/6000 Model SP, configured with 128 4-way nodes (PowerPC 604e, 332 MHz) and 32 2-way nodes (Power3, 200 MHz) as application servers (dialog/update servers), with 2 GB of memory each. The average CPU utilization of all application servers was 93 percent. More than one terabyte (TB) of IBM's Serial Storage Architecture and VSS (Virtual Storage Subsystem) disk space was used for the whole benchmark configuration. Average dialog response time was 1.96 seconds with an average CPU utilization of 99 percent on the database server. This benchmark was conducted in Poughkeepsie NY, and fully complies with the benchmark regulations issued by SAP and has been audited and certified by SAP.
