Sun and Unigraphs bring multi-threading to Unix MCAD market

Palo Alto 04 Oct 99 Sun Microsystems and Unigraphics Solutions are working together to develop the first multi-threaded Unix version of the Parasolid solid modelling kernel from Unigraphics for the Solaris Operating Environment. Running on the SMP technology Sun Ultra60 workstation, the Unigraphics application based on this new version of the Parasolid kernel increases overall application performance for Unigraphics customers, providing engineers with increased power and performance. This enables engineers to reduce design time and increase productivity.

"We are thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Sun to deliver even better performance to our customers," said Tony Affuso,vice-president of products and operations, Unigraphics Solutions Inc. "This joint effort allows us to develop and release an SMP technology-enabled version of Parasolid on the Sun platform, and subsequently an SMP technology-enabled version of Unigraphics."

The anticipated performance gains realized using SMP technology enables engineers to reduce the complex challenges of designing. Allowing users to deploy all the processing power, memory, I/O and graphics needed for today's demanding technical applications, without performance limitations, the Ultra 60 dual-processor workstation offers advantages of both application threading and multi-tasking. Early benchmarks on a few selected Parasolid test cases have shown excellent scaling results on a dual-processor Sun Ultra 60 workstation.

In addition to its use in UGS' Unigraphics and Solid Edge products, Parasolid is also licensed by a majority of the leading vendors of mechanical CAD/CAM/CAE software. Licensees of Parasolid include Parametric Technology, SolidWorks Corporation, a subsidiary of Dassault Systèmes SA, Bentley Systems, Visionary Design Systems, Ansys, Mechanical Dynamics and MacNeal-Schwendler, among others. Parasolid delivers an interoperable Data Pipeline allowing Parasolid-based systems to share and exchange data without translation. Systems on the Parasolid Data Pipeline have a rapidly growing share of both the high-end and mainstream mechanical CAD/CAM/CAE markets with more than 130 organizations currently licensing Parasolid and more than 85 Parasolid-based products shipped or announced. Over 300,000 end user products have the Parasolid kernel embedded within them.
