Amdahl announces Linux support
Sunnyvale 12 Oct 99 Amdahl will provide support for its LVS 4600 and 4800 Open Systems Storage products attached to Fujitsu team servers and other Intel e-based servers running the Linux operating system.
Linux, the popular open source Unix variant created by Linus Torvalds, has become one of the worlds most rapidly growing operating system environments. A vast departure from proprietary software, the open source movement promotes rapid application development by making source code freely available for all technology. It is fundamentally changing how companies develop, acquire, and profit from software. The extraordinarily popular Linux operating system and the Apache web server are two prominent examples of products developed in open source. By supporting the Linux operating system on the LVS 4600 and 4800, Amdahl continues to offer customers more choices to satisfy open storage requirements by providing broad based platform support with flexible, scalable configurations. The LVS 4600 and 4800 allows customers to grow their data storage capacity as required, add high availability features, and choose between SCSI or Fibre Channel performance. The Amdahl offerings can also participate in a storage area network (SAN), which helps centralize enterprise data storage. As requirements change, customers can add, adjust or re-deploy their open storage, thereby protecting their initial investment while taking advantage of the introduction of new technologies.
