Price cuts on SGI workstations
Mountain View 11 Oct 99 SGI announced significant price performance adjustments to their O2 and Octane visual workstation products, lowering memory upgrade prices by as much as 28%.
High-end configurations of the Octane visual workstation, bundled with 512MB memory, a doubled disk capacity of 18GB, and a 21 monitor, have dropped by $1700 U.S. This is an effective price reduction of 34% for the additional memory and disk a customer will get when choosing a high-end configuration instead of a lower-end configuration. Entry-level Octane configurations now ship with twice the disk and memory, providing 9GB of disk, 256MB memory and a 21 monitor - with no increase in the current price. In addition, the entry-level O2 visual workstation is also providing more value with no increase in price, including a RM5200TM 300MHz CPU, a doubled disk capacity of 9GB, 128MB of base memory and a 19 monitor. Memory upgrades for the Octane and O2 visual workstations have been significantly reduced as well. Prices for the 128MB memory upgrades have been lowered by 28%, to $1,000 US List, with 256MB upgrades lowered by 25% to $2100 US List. In addition, the new 512MB Octane memory upgrade is priced 19% less than the previously offered 512MB upgrade. The 256MB and 512MB memory upgrades for Octane are designed for the new Octane visual workstations with the MIPS® R12000TM CPU.
