CoCreate's SolidDesigner 3-D CAD system standard for Liebherr-Werk
Fort Collins 20 Oct 99 Liebherr-Werk Ehingen GmbH, a German manufacturer of mobile cranes, has made a strategic decision to standardize on HP subsidiaryCoCreate's SolidDesigner 3-D design solution. Under the terms of the contract, CoCreate supplied 34 seats of SolidDesigner including various modules and consulting to Liebherr this year. For the year 2000, 46 more seats of SolidDesigner are planned, including additional modules.
>According to Liebherr, the company expects to install designer workstations, with CoCreate's Engineering Solution, in a phased approach. CoCreate's Engineering Solution is a tightly integrated package consisting of SolidDesigner and the WorkManager product development management (PDM) solution. According to Liebherr, the company subjected SolidDesigner to a series of intensive tests on several design projects last year, following a two-year period in which it used a competing legacy 3-D CAD system. A very flexible system was required, as Liebherr often had to cope with model modifications that were not predictable at concept stage. The CoCreate software passed with flying colors. SolidDesigner's flexible, open approach offered many benefits over history-based 3-D models from other systems. One important benefit was that all models could be converted 100 percent to SolidDesigner, allowing them to be modified as if they were native models for future operations. According to Liebherr, two important factors in its decision to use CoCreate software were ease of learning and operation, which allowed designers to focus on their projects, and provided the capability to respond flexibly to unforeseen modifications. Another key for Liebherr was integration of 2-D processes, and the availability of customer-specific add-on modules, such as for sheet-metal modeling or welding. According to the company, another decisive factor was the compatibility of SolidDesigner with CoCreate's ME10 2-D drawing and documentation system, as 2-D drawing and manufacturing processes will continue to play an important role. The tight integration of SolidDesigner into the WorkManager PDM system was a key factor in the selection of the CoCreate design environment.
