Andrew Boswell said: Future information systems will be accessed not only through PCs, but also through a whole host of devices from mobile phones to television. John will draw on his experience across telecommunications and IT to lead ICLs research in such areas as mobile IT and wireless internet solutions. It is these areas which will transform life in the knowledge society.
Boswell added: Our work with ntl to provide the framework for interactive digital TV is a prime example of using technology to make life simpler. You can bank or shop from the comfort of your armchair. Technology is the facilitator, not an end in itself.
In his new role, Elmore will draw on over 8 years of experience at ICL. Prior to ICL, Elmore worked at the European Commission where he was responsible for the Software Technology and Advanced Information Processing sectors of the ESPRIT programme (the European Strategic Programme for Research and Development in IT). His career also includes 17 years spent at BTs Research Laboratories, his final post being the head of division responsible for research and development in System and Software Engineering.
