TOP500 supercomputer list available in XML

Almere 16 Nov 99 Primeur, the premier European HPCN news service, has teamed up with VMP - the Virtual Magazine Publisher Software - to make the TOP500 of most powerful supercomputers in the world list available to the community in XML format. Together with XSL stylesheets, this opens the possibility to everyone to analyse the list in great detail off-line and to integrate the results in other documents. The list is available at www.hoise.com/vmp/examples/top500/ together with a sample stylesheet extracting the European sites and organising the according to country. This shows that Luxembourg, with only a fourhundredthousand inhabitants but four TOP500 supercomputers, is supercomputer country number 1 in Europe and the world, when counting the number of machines per inhabitant - an impressive one supercomputer for each 100,000 inhabitants.

One of the nice things of the TOP500 is the possibility to analyse it and draw conclusions. On the TOP500 site some analysis tools are available to support that. However, it is not possible to do that off-line and specifying one's own set of analysing parameters.

The XML version of the November 1999 TOP500 list can be analysed using easy to write stylesheets in XSL format. The XSL-T REC standard, released by the W3C consortium earlier today provides a powerful set of functions to extract all kinds of information from XML documents and output a new XML or HTML document.

Primeur and VMP plan to also make other versions of the lists available, and add more example stylesheets. Anyone is invited to add to this initative that makes the TOP500 list even more widely accessible and provides examples of the power of XML and XSL-T.

The list is available at the Hoise VMP web site

The main TOP500 web site is to be found at: TOP500 web site.
