OpenGL Vizserver brings Onyx power tot the Desk top

Mountain View 15 Nov 99 SGI 's new OpenGL Vizserve , a technical computing solution designed to deliver advanced visualization capabilities and performance to the desktop. Implementing the Silicon Graphics Onyx2 visualization workstation as a graphics server, the new solution allows users to view and interact with large data sets from a desktop system at any location in an organization.

OpenGL Vizserver is designed primarily for users involved in scientific data visualization, including seismic data analysis, and in manufacturing design and engineering. SGI showcased the new OpenGL Vizserver at SuperComputing '99, November 15-17, in Portland, Ore.

OpenGL Vizserver enables a single Onyx2 workstation to distribute visualization sessions to multiple UNIX ; operating system desktop workstations. Onyx2 systems support concurrent, real-time processing of complex 3D graphics, rich 2D imagery and ultra high-resolution video for the world's fastest, most realistic visualization. With OpenGL Vizserver, graphics processing is handled entirely on the Onyx2 workstation, saving customers money by allowing them to leverage Onyx2 capabilities through the use of Silicon Graphics Octane O2® and other UNIX desktop systems.

In addition, OpenGL Vizserver offers the following features and benefits:

  • Transmits compressed images from the Onyx2 frame buffer, resulting in the fastest possible update to the client desktop system,
  • Ability to run over standard high-speed networks, without need for costly and restrictive special-purpose networking, and
  • Application transparency, allowing a wide range of applications to run over OpenGL Vizserver.
