French supercomputer centre CNUSC gets a new name and new machines

Paris 01 Sep 99 The national supercomputer centre for the French universities, located in Montpellier, received a new name, new statutes and new machines. Total computing power of the new centre will be 0.2 Tflop/s.

CNUSC, the national supercomputer center for the French academic research, located in Montpellier, reports to the French Ministry in charge of the universities. Almost 20 years after its establishment, CNUSC receives a new name: CINES (Centre Informatique National de l'Enseignement Superieur) and new statutes.

New machines have been installed:

  • 48 processors have been added to the IBM SP2; the total number of processors of this SP2 is now 207
  • A new SGI Origin2000 with 256 processors R12000 has been installed
The total peak performance of these machines is more than 200 Gflop/s and CINES is now one of the most powerful computing sites for academic research in Europe.
