HiPPI-6400 - New high-speed networking standardVienna, 30-4-97 The HiPPI forum has announced a new draft of the high-speed networking standard, called HiPPI-6400. This was revealed at a HiPPI Forum meeting at HPCN Europe 97 in Vienna The HiPPI Networking Forum (HNF) announced at their international meting meeting in Vienna a draft standard for the next generation Gbit/s local area network. The standard will be used in high-performance computing, manufacturing, entertainment, data-mining, enterprise networking, CAD and OLAP. HiPPI-6400 delivers high sustained bandwidth for bulk data transfer applications. The bandwidth can be 6.4 Gbit/s with low latencies. An advantage of the standard is the upward compatibility with Gigabit Ethernet. The introduction of gigabyte networking technology is important for emerging industries and large intranets that depend on timely movement of large amounts of information. According to Arie van Praag, senior scientist at CERN, the coming experience at this physics research laboratories in the Large Hadron Collider, will produce up to 10 Terabytes per second. They benefit from HiPPI-6400, that will help to capture, store, analyse, and display the experiments. The HiPPI Networking Forum is an international group dedicated to advancing the High Performance Parallel Interface (HiPPI) standard. It provides training, testing and demonstrations of HiPPI technology. For more information, check the HiPPI -6400 information server.
