Researchers from both academia and industry are invited to share their latest research findings in the area of EPIC architectures and compiler technology. The EPIC style of architecture was developed to enable new levels of instruction-level parallelism not achieved with traditional architectures. By allowing the compiler to express programme parallelism and other relevant information directly to the processor, EPIC architectures can overcome hardware complexity issues that limit performance in traditional microprocessors. The major challenge in realizing the full potential of EPIC architectures is developing compiler and runtime optimization technologies that effectively deploy explicitly defined hardware mechanisms, and deliver performance for both commercial and scientific applications. This workshop will focus on promising research concepts that enable the EPIC architecture model.

The goal of HPCS 2008 is to encourage innovation in high performance computing and communication technologies and to promote synergistic advances in modeling methodologies and simulation. It will promote the exchange of ideas and information between universities, industry, and national laboratories about new developments in system modeling, high performance computing and communication, and scientific computing and simulation.

Data mining and knowledge discovery is rapidly becoming an important tool in all walks of human endeavour including science, engineering, industrial processes, health care, business, medicine and society. The datasets in these fields are large, complex, and often noisy. Extracting knowledge requires the use of sophisticated, high-performance and principled analysis techniques and algorithms, based on sound theoretical and statistical foundations. These techniques in turn require powerful visualization technologies; implementations that must be carefully tuned for performance; software systems that are usable by scientists, engineers, and physicians as well as researchers; and infrastructures that support them.

This conference provides a venue for researchers who are addressing these problems to present their work in a

peer-reviewed forum. It also provides an ideal setting for graduate students and others new to the field to learn about cutting-edge research by hearing outstanding invited speakers and attending tutorials. A set of focused workshops are also held on the last day of the conference.

IWOMP is the premier opportunity to learn more about parallel programming with OpenMP and to interact with OpenMP users and developers. The workshop also serves as a forum to present the latest research ideas and results related to OpenMP. IWOMP 2008 will be a three-day event. The first day will consist of tutorials focusing on topics of interest to current and prospective OpenMP developers, suitable for both beginners as well as those interested in learning of recent developments in the evolving OpenMP standard. The second and third days will consist of technical papers and panel session(s) during which research ideas and results will be presented and discussed.

SVR 2008, sponsored by the Brazilian Society of Computing (SBC), is an international scientific forum for the exchange of experience and knowledge among researchers, professionals, practitioners, students and developers concerned with research and development of virtual environments, virtual, augmented and mixed reality systems. The planned activities for SVR include a pre-symposium with minicourses, keynote speakers, technical minicourses, technical sessions, and thesis, dissertations and undergraduate work workshops.

This workshop is dedicated primarily to identify and address the main challenges in the newly emerging multi-core software engineering and distributed programming paradigm. This workshop will provide a discussion forum and cross-fertilisation of multi-core technology with well established grid and distributed programming paradigms. The workshop is part of the 8th IEEE International Symposium on Cluster Computing and the Grid (CCGRID2008).

SSDU-08 is intended to foster the dissemination of state-of-the-art research in the area of security and intelligence integrating into Ubi-com and data management technology. Also, it offers an opportunity for academic and industry professionals to discuss the latest issues and progress in the area of security, service and data management technologies in Ubi-com.

The objective of this one-day workshop is to bring together researchers and practitioners from the high-performance computing, scientific computing, distributed systems and database communities to discuss the challenges and propose novel solutions in the design and implementation of high-performance data management in Grid environments. The workshop is colated and organized with VECPAR'08.

This workshop is intended to cover recent developments (algorithms, programmes, packages, extensions, new tools, etc.) for computer algebra systems (CAS). Emphasis will be placed upon the applications of these systems for solving problems in science and engineering.

The workshop, held in conjunction with the International Conference on Computational Science and Applications, is

intended as an international forum for researchers in all areas of computational geometry and related areas, with the goal of advancing the state of research in computational geometry and related disciplines. This workshop attempts to bring together theoreticians and practitioners working in the areas of high-performance parallel, distributed and Grid computing and those working in the areas of high-performance computer graphics and information visualization.

This workshop intends to explore the "cross-fertilization" between computational sciences and biology, with a special attention to concurrent models in biology and formal foundations in bio-inspired computing. Concurrency theory permits hypotheses generation and testing. Models can therefore be simulated, analyzed, checked and validated.

A growing "arsenal" of theoretical models, logics, and tools for understanding concurrent systems has been developed. Concurrency permeates not only computer systems but also nature and living organisms. Concurrency can be found at the molecular level as well as at those of cells, organs, individuals, communities and ecological systems. Also, biologically inspired computing could benefit from concurrency theory.

DAPSYS 2008 is a major international event for presenting original research, novel concepts and methods, and outstanding results. Contributions that investigate parallel and distributed techniques, algorithms, models and

applications; present innovative software tools, environments and middleware; focus on various aspects of Grid computing; introduce novel methods for development, deployment, testing and evaluation are invited. DAPSYS 2008 will feature a special focus on desktop Grid computing. Contributions that investigate desktop Grids and volunteer computing systems, large-scale computing applications, present recent advances of scalability, fault-tolerance and security in desktop grid systems are especially welcome.

This symposium is dedicated to the understanding and characterization of workloads that run on all types of computing systems. New applications and programming paradigms continue to emerge as the diversity and performance of computers increase. On the one hand, computing workloads evolve and change with advances in microarchitecture, compilers, programming languages, and networking/communication technologies. On the other hand, improvements in computing technology are usually based on a solid understanding and analysis of existing

workloads. Whether they are PDAs, wireless and embedded systems at the low end or massively parallel systems at the high end, the design of future computing machines can be significantly improved if we understand the characteristics of the workloads that are expected to run on them.

The symposium welcomes proposals for workshops organisation on relevant topics within the scope of the main conference. Workshops should be focused on advanced and on-the-edge aspects of research in the field of intelligent distributed systems, stimulating discussion, collaboration and exchange of views.
