Health Services Pavilion, an addition to the main hospital, will offer state-of-the-art outpatient services including cardiac rehabilitation, cardiology, neurology, physical and occupational therapy, radiology, surgery and pre-surgery testing. In implementing the Marconi solution, the North Kansas City Hospital ensures not only optimal performance for this type of services but also an excellent standard of reliability. The core of the network addition in Health Services Pavilion is the Marconi ASX-4000, which scales to speeds of 40 Gbps. The core of the Pavilion's network is connected via OC-12c (622 Mbps) links to the ASX-4000 backbone in the main facility and via OC-12 links to feeder ASX-1000 switches. OC-3c (155 Mbps) connections bring users to the network via ES-3810 and ESX-2400 switches, deployed in network closets throughout the new addition.
"Superior network design has been the primary factor in the original decision to select Marconi. The redundancy designed into the network and the fault-tolerance features embedded in the switches themselves delivered the peak level of reliability required in a networking environment where lives are at stake", commented Mary Siero, director of information systems with North Kansas City Hospital. "Also, Marconi is very knowledgeable of and committed to delivering solutions which are optimised for the health care industry's most advanced services. The Marconi solution offers us the network flexibility and muscle to eventually adopt applications, including telemedicine, teleradiology and telecardiology."
"The unprecedented levels of reliability and performance delivered by Marconi multi-service networks have helped in driving the introduction of a variety of health care innovations. For example, with Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS), physicians and staff within a hospital or among many institutions share radiology images in real time and, in turn, make treatment decisions more rapidly", stated Bill Bridgwater, who is Marconi's president of the Americas. "We look forward to continuing to work with North Kansas City Hospital in creating a network infrastructure capable of exploiting the potential of the latest developments in life-saving technologies."
